Mechanical arms physically probe objects, guided by the user; points are recorded on the surface of subjects. Intuitive but slow. Unsuitable for delicate objects.

creators the fastest, easiest, and lowest-cost solution for generating high-quality
fully-textured 3D models of physical objects.
Lightscribe 3D enables 3D content creation
that is easy and fast. In most cases a fully-textured 3D model can be created
in less than an hour. With Lightscribe 3D there is no need to stitch together
scans from multiple views, the system exports complete 3D models at resolutions
ranging from several hundred polygons to over one million, with sub-millimeter
accuracy. Built in decimation and smoothing tools enable model modification
directly within Lightscribe 3D software. Finished 3D models can be exported
as standard formats including 3DS, OBJ, VRML, and DXF.
Lightscribe 3D provides price and performance
improvements in 3D capture by combining a low cost video camera, a hand held
laser stylus, and image processing software. The application utilizes series
of images created as the object rotates on a computer controlled turntable with
data from dynamic laser scanning using a stripe of laser light to extract the
object's complete 3D geometry. The texture map of the object is also created
in this process, and can be peeled off the object and edited in any standard
image processing software as a JPG, TIF, or GIF file.
