3D Laser Scanners
A laser line moves over subjects' surfaces; an off-set camera records deformation. Triangulation calculates a 3D mesh. Slower, but higher accuracy enabled for static objects.
3D Mechanical Digitizers
Mechanical arms physically probe objects, guided by the user; points are recorded on the surface of subjects. Intuitive but slow. Unsuitable for delicate objects.
3D Scanning software
View, edit and export scan data efficiently and accurately. Triangulation, registration and merging algorithms, polygon editing, CAD conversion, model export for web viewing.

Mephisto Complete The most versatile and popular option, consisting of DLP projector, fire wire camera, Canon SLR camera and Mephisto software. Suitable for high resolution scanning of static and animate objects utilising fire wire camera or Canon DSLR (both modes can include high resolution texture images). Includes bidirectional scanning mode. No limits placed on accuracy or scanning speed. Accuracy as high as 0.06mm.
Mephisto Micro Based on Extreme system, Mephisto Micro is designed to scan small objects at high resolution. Specialised optics and mounting gear allows you to reduce scanning area to 7.5 cm (3 in). Sophisticated chroma aberrations control algorithm combined with full control over projected fringe colour and gamma gives perfect tool to handle small, detailed object scanning.

q If the Mephisto 3D scanner is using consumer hardware, how can it compete with specially developed 3d scanning hardware?
a Why re-invent the wheel? Instead of developing expensive custom hardware and driving up the price of the system, the team at 4D dynamics have spent their time developing what is probably one of the fastest and most accurate 3D scanning software algorithms in the world.
q Why is the Mephisto system so cheap compared to many other 3D scanners?
a We want to offer the most cost effective quality 3D scanning solution on the market. Tried and tested consumer hardware is used to keep the price down, while state-of-the-art software gives performance which can match competitive systems which are three times the price.
q Your web site states that the Mephisto has an approximate capture time of 1/3 of a second. How long does it take to process this information and transfer the files before the scanner is ready to take a second scan?
a The Mephisto 3D scanner can triangulate a scan of 1.5 million triangles in as little as two seconds. We think that's the fastest 3d data processing available.
q What is the scanning volume of the system? For example, is it possible to 3D scan a Human face as well as the side of a car?
a The beauty of this system is its flexibility. You can scan a coin or the side of the house with the same basic components. To 3D scan very small objects you might want to invest in a telephoto conversion lens for your projector. To 3D scan very large objects you need to throw light at them - just a case of hiring in a more powerful projector for the day.
q Do I need two 3D scanners to scan a whole face at once, or can it be done with just one scanner?
a Features such as your nose will cause occlusion or 'shadows' in the data of a single scan. So you will either have to take two scans from slightly different viewpoints or purchase the 'Mephisto Pro' which uses two cameras to give you complete data from ear to ear.
q Can the 3d scans be exported to .obj format, or some other common format?
a Mephisto software lets you export in .obj, .ply and ASCII text formats. The data can be point clouds, colour per vertex, triangulated models and triangulated models with associated UV maps.
