3D Optical Digitizers
Patterned light is projected onto subjects; deformation is recorded by an off-set camera. Triangulation calculates a 3D mesh. Fast, accurate and adaptable for human portraiture.
3D Laser Scanners
A laser line moves over subjects' surfaces; an off-set camera records deformation. Triangulation calculates a 3D mesh. Slower, but higher accuracy enabled for static objects.
3D Mechanical Digitizers
Mechanical arms physically probe objects, guided by the user; points are recorded on the surface of subjects. Intuitive but slow. Unsuitable for delicate objects.
3D Scanning software
View, edit and export scan data efficiently and accurately. Triangulation, registration and merging algorithms, polygon editing, CAD conversion, model export for web viewing.

3rdTech DeltaSphere 3000 3D Laser Scanner
The DeltaSphere 3000 is a Laser 3D Scene Digitizer,
used to create real-world models from real-world scenes. The DeltaSphere captures
both 3D points and full colour textures, resulting in highly detailed and accurate
3d models suitable for manufacturing, construction and surveying type applications.
3rdTech DeltaSphere 3000
Performance, precision, and portability in
a compact design—the DeltaSphere-3000 breaks new ground in 3D scanning
and scene reconstruction. Based on research from the Computer Science Department
of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the DeltaSphere-3000 uses
a time-of-flight, modulated beam laser rangefinder to rapidly produce panoramic,
accurate 3D point sets. These data sets can be combined with colour information
(captured with the optional, integrated, high-resolution digital colour camera)
to produce extraordinarily detailed and accurate 3D scenes.
Completed Scans
Applications:
Recording precise ‘as built’
dimensions for manufacturing, construction and surveying in the aerospace,
automotive, oil & gas, chemical, and construction industries

SceneVision-3D
Software included:
SceneVision is the first tool for 3D scan data
designed for both first-time and expert users. It combines intuitive
navigation and button controls and interactive performance with a
broad range of viewing, modeling, and analysis functions. In just
minutes you'll be looking at scanned scene data, making measurements,
and building computer graphics models. 3D scanned data can be displayed
in many forms, each with its special utility or insight. SceneVision
provides a wealth of visualisation possibilities - 2D projections
of the 3D laser scan, laser data with colour added, 3D models as shaded
graphics, wire frames, point clouds, or 3D outlines produced by SceneVision
measurement and annotation functions:
Capturing a complete scene or object often requires scanning from
more than one location - in order to see both sides of an object or
part of a surface 'behind' another object. SceneVision provides functions
to quickly and easily 'align' these scans to produce a single model
from multiple scans. A similar alignment is used to 'map' digital
photographs taken with the DeltaSphere's calibrated camera to range
data captured with the DeltaSphere's laser. These 'color align' functions
were used to add color to all of the color data shown on these web
pages, and are also used to insert high-resolution, close-up photos
in 3D computer graphics models for applications ranging from museum
displays to blood spatter analysis.
SceneVision is much more than a tool for viewing
data and building models. It provides simple, fast measurement functions
for finding the distance between any points in a scan, perpendicular
distances, angle measurements, and intersections of lines and surfaces.
You can also create schematics of rooms, with accurate measurements,
quickly and easily, with SceneVision-3D's new Wall Wizard. You can
also mark points and objects in a room, or save a particular viewpoint.
You can add notes to any of your annotations, and attach documents,
photos, or web sites for additional information.
SceneVision goes one step further by offering application-specific
analysis functions. The first is a blood spatter analysis tool. Working
with high-resolution photos of blood spatter embedded in the 3D model,
you can produce calculated blood spatter trajectories and view them
within the scene. SceneVision-3D will even import the calculations
from BackTrack software and display the results, visually, in the
model.

ThingLab FAQs....
q   What is a 'scene scanner'?
a   This is a term commonly used for any 3D scanner that is capable of capturing information from a large area of space. Commonly the can scan 360 degrees on the horizontal and 150 degress vertically.
q   How does the DeltaSphere work?
a   A rotating mirror directs a laser in an arc around the scanning head - this then rotates on a motorized base to produce a 360 degree 3D panorama. The depth information is recored using 'time of flight' technology, basically how long each of the laser pulses take to return to the scan head.
q   Is the laser eye safe?
a   The standard laser unit is eye safe, although as with all products that use lasers you should never look directly into the beam. The Infrared unit is not eye safe and anyone in the area should wear protective eye glasses.
q   How do I view the data produced?
a   3rdTech provide a piece of software called SceneVision which allows you take measurements, create basic template geometry, convert the point cloud to triangle, export the file as VRML data.
